Marcel Brunery was a painter born on 10 September, 1893. Brunerys father was an Italian born artist, Francesco Brunery. His mother was Maria née Fillion. He was taught how to paint by his father who is widely held to be the inventor of the genre ‘Cardinal Painting’. Because of this, his father had a great influence on him and his style. Brunery followed in his fathers footsteps, like his father he went on to produce many works featuring Cardinals as well as historical scenes. These cardinal works had a degree of comedy to them. Depicted against an opulent interior with panelled walls and rich antiques dotted around the compositions.

Brunery excelled at depicting the clergy and nobility in a humorous way. The narratives he chose involved the clergy and nobility interacting in domestic dramas that showed them to be one in the same as the ‘common man’. With the knowledge taught to him by his father, he was able to take the genre to a new level. Brunery had a unique talent being able to paint his scenes with a remarkable level of exactness and precision. These robust in colour pieces were lavish artworks, they have made him highly popular with private collectors over the years. Brunerys work is on display at the Warrington Museum & Art Gallery.

On the 19th July in 1930 he married Yvonne Estradere at Bagneres de Luchon. Soon after  they had a son together, Francis in 1935. In the same year, he made his debut at the Société des Artistes Indépendants with a work entitled ‘La Lecon’. In 1846 the family moved to live at 18, rue Pierre-Demours. He remained living and working in Paris until his death on 16 August, 1982 at Suresnes, Hauts-De-Seine.
