Ernest Ehlers was a renowned landscape painter born 3rd April 1858 at St Johns, Newfoundland. He studied at Edinburgh Art School and in Germany.  Ehlers was elected RWA (Royal West of England Academy, in Bristol) in 1896.  He was the founder of the British Savages Art Society for Bristol artists in 1894 and lived for many years at Clifton, Bristol
