William Dring was born in London in 1904. Dring was formally trained. He studied under Henry Tonks at Slade School of Fine Art from 1922 to 1925. He emerged as a fine draughtsman and portrait painter. Dring was fond of using his family as subject matters. While studying, Dring won several prizes and scholarships at Slade. Throught his career Dring accomplished many incredible feats including teaching at Southampton School of Art until 1940. He became an official war artist, whose work is well represented in the Imperial War Museum. After the war he became a noted RA exhibitor, elected RA in 1955. William Dring passed away in 1990.
