Steve is known for his wildlife sculpture across the globe, with a lot of his works expressing the prowess of animals from around the world. He started this sculpture as he wanted to portray the biggest and most iconic of our wildlife here in the UK, the “Monarch”. The Red Deer is the largest native mammal species, for Steve one siting in particular of a full-grown Red Stag whilst travelling up in Scotland has stook with him to this day and is the main driving inspiration for this piece.
For Steve this work also has a spiritual meaning. For thousands of years the stag has been intertwined with myth and legend in our culture here in the UK. Being able to express his own take on this majestic creature to add further to its legacy and immortalise it in bronze, is something he has always wanted to do.
From seeing stags over the years, it was their regal elegance and aura that really stood out for Steve, he said “you can’t help but be in awe and feel the connection we have with these beautiful animals”. With the composition and pose of the stag he has captured this strength exquisitely.
As a long serving trustee and wildlife conservationist enthusiast, Steve has travelled the world gaining inspiration and knowledge about animals. He began expressing the inspiration through painting, but with an engineering background it wasn’t long before he taught himself to sculpt and then later launched his own family run studio and foundry in 2002. The business has now flourished and boasts more than 20 years of experience in delivering a huge number of challenging and varied commissions.
Steve is a world renowned sculptor and works with a number of well established names from the fine-art world, including: Halcyon Gallery, Carrs Silver, Monaco Fine Arts, Hickmet Fine Arts, Sotheby’s, Christies, LAPADA and BADA. Along the journey of working with precious metals Steve and his family have obtained the skills to work with silver and gold and have been granted their own British Hallmark. Sports fans may also be familiar with his flagship piece at Wembley Stadium: this spectacular bronze commissioned by the charity Rugby League Cares, features five legends of Rugby League which is now considered a Wembley landmark in its own right.
