For Millenia Bulls have been revered as a species by us and different cultures have all had their own ways of intertwining themselves in forms of competition from Bull Riding to Bullfighting, with these magnificent creatures usually coming out on top. Steve Winterburn is known for his power and dynamics, so it was only a matter of time before he captured the dominance of the bull in sculpture.
“Get off my Back” is exactly that, the abstracted and compelling tooling strokes instantly hit you when you first lay eyes on this piece. The way Steve has sculpted the surface makes it command the space that surrounds this sculpture and really drives home the narrative of dominance and strength that he wanted to create for this artwork.
The real mastery however came into play when composing the bull, the moment that has been encapsulated in this sculpture is truly breathtaking, poised off one leg with all limbs and tail flared this piece is an explosion of expression. When partnered with the striking textures created, Steve’s skills create a showstopping work of art that demands an audience in any environment.
As a long serving trustee and wildlife conservationist enthusiast, Steve has travelled the world gaining inspiration and knowledge about animals. He began expressing the inspiration through painting, but with an engineering background it wasn’t long before he taught himself to sculpt and then later launched his own family run studio and foundry in 2002. The business has now flourished and boasts more than 20 years of experience in delivering a huge number of challenging and varied commissions.
Steve is a world renowned sculptor and works with a number of well established names from the fine-art world, including: Halcyon Gallery, Carrs Silver, Monaco Fine Arts, Hickmet Fine Arts, Sotheby’s, Christies, LAPADA and BADA. Along the journey of working with precious metals Steve and his family have obtained the skills to work with silver and gold and have been granted their own British Hallmark. Sports fans may also be familiar with his flagship piece at Wembley Stadium: this spectacular bronze commissioned by the charity Rugby League Cares, features five legends of Rugby League which is now considered a Wembley landmark in its own right.
