The Barn owl is one of the most iconic sights to behold in the UK. These beautiful creatures have been a subject that Steve has wanted to sculpt for many years now, with the farm barns opposite the family studio being a consistent home for nesting. This close proximity to the birds means he has become very familiar with the ins and outs of both the personalities and physical characteristics, which is very apparent in the finished sculpture.
The composition of the piece shows the owl poised on an organic post, as though on a farm fence scanning for prey. The still tranquil feel created by Steve expresses patience, arguably the most important trait of these skilful predators. The sculpture is a lovely combination of the famous Winterburn loose tooling and fine-tuned detailing, the coarse textures running from the base up through the body funnel your eyes beautifully to the focal point, being the delicately sculpted face. The natural flow of this piece drawing the audience to the face and eyes of the owl makes it very warm and welcoming making it very easy to connect with and even easier to place, with it bringing a homely feel wherever this Barn Owl sculpture is situated.
The name behind this sculpture is derived from the ghost like nature of this bird for which they are well known. Their illusive manner and nocturnal tendencies leads to them being distanced from society and thus ever more encaptivating and special when we are graced with their presence in the countryside and so the piece is named “Country Solitude”.
As a long serving trustee and wildlife conservationist enthusiast, Steve has travelled the world gaining inspiration and knowledge about animals. He began expressing the inspiration through painting, but with an engineering background it wasn’t long before he taught himself to sculpt and then later launched his own family run studio and foundry in 2002. The business has now flourished and boasts more than 20 years of experience in delivering a huge number of challenging and varied commissions.
Steve is a world renowned sculptor and works with a number of well established names from the fine-art world, including: Halcyon Gallery, Carrs Silver, Monaco Fine Arts, Hickmet Fine Arts, Sotheby’s, Christies, LAPADA and BADA. Along the journey of working with precious metals Steve and his family have obtained the skills to work with silver and gold and have been granted their own British Hallmark. Sports fans may also be familiar with his flagship piece at Wembley Stadium: this spectacular bronze commissioned by the charity Rugby League Cares, features five legends of Rugby League which is now considered a Wembley landmark in its own right.
