Andrew Macara is a highly regarded contemporary British painter, known for his distinctive oil paintings exploring light, colour, movement and everyday life. Born in Derbyshire in 1944, Macara is predominantly self-taught, having developed his early understanding of painting by studying and copying the works of artists including Rembrandt and Velázquez.
Macara briefly studied under Leonard Fuller at the St Ives School of Painting in Cornwall, but his artistic development has largely been independent. He began exhibiting professionally in his twenties and was elected to the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1984, becoming an established figure within contemporary British painting.
A central concern throughout Macara’s work is the effect of light. Rather than simply depicting a particular place or subject, he uses light, colour and simplified forms to create paintings that capture the atmosphere and energy of a moment. His work occupies an intriguing space between figurative and abstract painting, with the subject often providing a starting point for a more painterly exploration of colour, tone and composition.
